It is unashamedly canonical rather than thematic, in its examination of central authors and periods, without neglecting female writers. It does not attempt an encyclopaedic coverage of Portuguese literature, but provides essential chronological and bibliographical information on all major authors and genres, with more extensive treatment of key works and literary figures, and a particular focus on the modern period. It consists of a chronological overview of Portuguese literature from the twelfth century to the present day, by one of the most distinguished literary scholars of recent years, leading into substantial essays centred on major authors, genres or periods and a study of the history of translations. This companion volume offers an introduction to European Portuguese literature for university-level readers. 5/24/2023 0 Comments The autobiography of malcolm![]() ![]() In early 1965, a trio suspected to have been associated with the Nation of Islam gunned him down as he was about to give a speech in Harlem. In fact, while Malcolm X did read drafts of the book, he never lived to see it in print. ![]() The book is unusual in that it was transcribed and constructed by Alex Haley from thousands of hours of conversations he had with Malcolm X in the early 1960s. While the book received high praise when it was first published in 1965, it immediately engendered questions about its authorship. Many considered Malcolm X's separatist philosophies (later softened) disturbing and in direct opposition to those of the period's other well-known black activists, including Martin Luther King, Jr., who argued for integration and nonviolent confrontation. ![]() It is also a tale of, as the author puts it, a "homemade" education pursued in the schools, on the streets, in prison, and at the feet of his mentor Elijah Muhammad. The Autobiography of Malcolm X is the life story of Malcolm Little: son of a Baptist minister, wide-eyed teenager in Boston, street hustler and prison inmate in New York, faithful and energetic member of the Nation of Islam, and, finally, Muslim pilgrim determined to create an organization for all blacks regardless of their religion. ![]() 5/24/2023 0 Comments My last sigh bunuel![]() ![]() Having worked in Europe and North America, and in French and Spanish, Buñuel also directed films spanning various genres. When Buñuel died at the age of 83, his obituary in The New York Times called him "an iconoclast, moralist, and revolutionary who was a leader of avant-garde surrealism in his youth and a dominant international movie director half a century later".
