In 1920 Wells wrote an immensely popular historical work, The Outline of History. Two works in particular, The Discovery of the Future (1902) and Mankind in the Making (1903) caught the attention of George Bernard Shaw and Wells was invited to join the Fabian Society. Wells produced a significant corpus of journalistic, philosophical, and political writing as well as fiction. Moreau was published in the following year and War of the Worlds two years later.
